Extended trip - Red Rock (Ben Nevis) - 10-12 April 2026
10-04-2026 09:00 – 12-04-2026 16:00
Come and check out the granite slabs at Red Rock (Ben Nevis) in Western Victoria! Red Rock is a 200m high cliff with nice rock.  Some rebolting efforts last year means there's now a number of reasonably-protected multi-pitch routes. Material has been prepared for the new guidebook (see sample topo in trip photo) and will be distributed to attendees. Trip Organiser - Steve Toal Email the trip organiser for more information or to register for the trip.  Camping It's about 2 hours drive from Melbourne.  We'll be camping at Chinaman Camping area (free, good facilities, very poor mobile reception) and driving up the mountain (10-15 minutes) each day. Red Rock is only a 5 minute walk-in from the top car park (assuming you have a 4WD). The slabs face west meaning not a good option for hot weather.  It should be very pleasant by April. Requirements This trip is open to members and guests, and suitable for intermediate to experienced climbers only who are comfortable with multi-pitch rappels and climbing on granite. Find your level here at the Trip Participant Guidelines or contact the trip organiser.  All intending participants can expect the trip organiser to ask for details about your climbing experience and gear. Booking Email the trip organiser to register for the trip.  This is important! The trip organiser will be in touch after you register to confirm your booking. You are not booked on the trip until you are confirmed by Steve.  Car Pooling The club encourages car pooling. However, this is optional and each participant should make their own risk assessment. The trip organiser will contact participants before the trip to arrange carpools.

**Two tickets are available for members. See below for details** Experience Adventure with Meaning: Mountainfilm on Tour 2026 Hits Melbourne For those who live for the trail, the rock and the open sky, the Mountainfilm on Tour 2026 is more than just a cinema night - it is a pre-season catalyst for your next great adventure. Presented by Osprey, this legendary festival tour from Telluride, Colorado, arrives at The Astor Theatre in Melbourne on Thursday, 12 March, bringing with it a curated selection of world-class short films that celebrate the "indomitable human spirit." While many film tours focus solely on "the send" or the adrenaline spike, Mountainfilm distinguishes itself by leaning into the why. This year’s Australian program is a diverse mix of human-powered stories designed for the outdoor community. Highlights include: Human-Powered Missions: Follow splitboarders through Colorado’s San Juan Mountains as they drop everything to earn their lines under their own steam during a rare weather window. Progressive Storytelling: A raw look at the mental and physical preparation behind Red Bull Rampage, shifting the focus from high-speed spectacle to the deep psychological load of elite freeride mountain biking. Inclusion in the Wild: An inspiring piece on adaptive skiers and snowboarders undertaking hands-on avalanche training, proving that access to safety and the backcountry should never be limited by ability. Environmental & Cultural Depth: Beyond the action, expect stories of river guides challenging industry norms and desert climbers whose art mirrors the precision of the rock. The tour lands in Melbourne at the perfect time - just as winter objectives begin to take shape. Whether you are a "trad dad," a "gym crusher," or a weekend wanderer, this event is a chance to reconnect with the bigger picture of outdoor culture. Tickets: Available to purchase via Eventbrite The event organisers have provided two complementary tickets for VCC members. Enter the giveaway by 'buying a ticket' below. Entry to the giveaway closes on Monday, 9 March. Winners will be selected at random and notified on Tuesday 10 March.   The draw is only available to VCC members (so log into your account to book into the draw) and limited to one entry per member. If you are feeling unlucky but want to attend the event, book your ticket for Mountainfilm on Tour 2026 now and take a friend if you win the draw. Good luck!

That way, you can be offered a place if someone is unable to attend.  Once amongst the most popular climbing areas in Victoria, climbing at Summer Day Valley has been restricted to guided groups since 2019. The club is engaging licenced guides for a day of climbing during the March long weekend. These locations have been booked: Morning: Back Wall (left side) and Back Wall (right side) Afternoon: Barc Cliff and Back Wall (right side) Depending on interest from participants, there will be a 1-2 hour skills session in the afternoon covering escapable anchors set-up and prusik techniques. Trip Organiser - Glen Donohue Email the trip organiser for bookings on the trip.  Requirements This trip will only be open to members, and novice, intermediate and advanced climbers. Novice climber spaces will be limited by the number of advanced climbers who come along. The club does not cater for beginners. Novice climbers attending trips are expected to have some climbing experience and minimum technical competencies. See the Trip Participant Guidelines for more information.  Camping This event coincides with the Long weekend - Northern Grampians/Gariwerd - 7-9 March 2026 event. Participants will booking into this trip. Check out the arrangements, especially if you plan on not camping and need to organise alternate accommodation for the long weekend.    --------------------------------- Expressions of interest - Closed 1 February 2026 This event was initially managed as an expression of interest. The content below relates to the EOI, which has closed and no longer relevant. The trip is now managed through a waitlist, and places offered as they become available.  The club has booked a licenced tour operator to take us climbing at Summer Day Valley for a day. The trip participants will share the cost of the guide, which is $36 per person. The trip will only go ahead if there is enough interest from members. (Enough interest has been received and the trip is proceeding.) Before you register your interest, this will not be like a normal club trip: The most obvious difference is you pay to participate and the trip will only proceed if there is enough interest You should consider an expression of interest as a commitment to pay. If there is enough interest, the club pays up front then recovers the money from trip participants. So, expect to pay if you express interest If we get enough interest and the trip proceeds: You are expected to pay up front to secure a spot. Payment will be required in early February It will be managed by a waitlist process, where people who expressed interest first are offered a place first. Do not expect a full refund if you cancel. You only get a refund if your place is filled by someone else. The climbing will be restricted to specific areas. The tour operators can only book selected areas at the crag. We will climb in one ‘sector’ in the morning and another in the afternoon. The areas will be decided by the trip organiser and the tour operator.  This event will be part of a three day trip over the March long weekend. You don't need to attend the three day event to attend this trip, and visa versa.
